Three Ways to Introduce Breathwork to Your Clients - Therapist Edition

The results are in!  Breathwork is the number one somatic healing modality for nervous system regulation.  Integrating breathwork into your mental health practice enhances emotional regulation, grounds your clients into the present, and provides them with a powerful tool to support them to navigate and transform their mental and emotional well-being.

If you're a therapist looking to sprinkle a bit of breathwork healing into your sessions, here are 3 ways to introduce the practice to your clients. 

Ask Questions About the Breath:

During your sessions, take a moment to ask your client to notice how they’re breathing.  As you’re discussing certain topics, guide them to assess for themselves: Is there a change in the pace, depth, quality or intensity of their breathing?  

This simple awareness exercise serves as a powerful tool for supporting your clients to regulate their nervous systems. It's amazing how the breath can become a guide, offering subtle insights into their emotional states and helping to cultivate a deeper connection to their sense of Self.

Short Guided Breathing Practices:

Not every breathwork session needs to be an hour-long affair.  Consider starting or wrapping up your sessions with short, sweet guided breathing practices. Think the BOX Breath, 6-7-8 Breath, or the soothing Ocean Breath, for just 1-2 minutes. These techniques work wonders in grounding, centering, and soothing the nervous system. They're like a breath of fresh air, providing a quick reset without the need for a full-blown meditation or extensive breathwork session.

Body-Based Interventions:

Are your clients open to exploring body-based techniques like breathwork? Open up the conversation and gauge their interest. Breathwork sessions can be tailored to fit varying durations, ranging from a quick 10-minute refresher to more immersive 60- or 90-minute experiences. Remember to offer guided integration and support post-session to make sure your clients feel grounded and supported after their breathwork journey.
