Boundaries through Breathwork and Healing People-Pleasing as BIPOC with Elizabeth Torres on The Playground Podcast

In Ep. 103 of The Playground Podcast: Boundaries through Breathwork and Healing People-Pleasing as BIPOC, we spoke with Boundary Coach, Elizabeth Torres, on what it means to set boundaries, growing up in a multigenerational household, and why having spaces for BIPOC to express themselves is necessary.

Liz realized that the issues she was having regarding anxiety, mental health, and relationship problems all stemmed from lack of boundaries and people-pleasing.

She details how people-pleasing while growing up in a multi-generational household shows up. She often faced expectations and the perception of laziness when she would set a boundary on completing a task that was expected of her.

“People pleasing is saying yes to everything or feeling bad for not saying yes because you feel like there's going to be consequences. Saying yes due to guilt, or thinking your relationship will be harmed.”

After experimenting with meditation for a while, she found that Breathwork, an active meditation, helped her to become more self aware and gain substantial rest. She started off learning from those who weren’t from the cultures that practiced them, and who didn’t know the roots of breathwork. She knew then that she needed to learn this practice from a teacher of the BIPOC community. She then decided to become Flow Breathwork certified through AlwaysPlay Studios.

Furthermore, having spaces for BIPOC to authentically express themselves and heal is important. It is through shared experiences that we learn, grow, and heal.
